How to store injection pens and pre-filled syringes at home
General guidance, checked by our pharmacist. Your medicine's own leaflet and your doctor's advice always come first.
Many specialty medicines, such as biologic pens, pre-filled syringes and some vials, must be kept cold, between 2 °C and 8 °C. This guide explains how to do that at home.
When your parcel arrives
- Open the insulated box straight away and put the medicine in the fridge.
- Check that the pack is sealed and that the name, strength and expiry match your bill.
- If the box arrived warm or the pack looks damaged, don't use it. Message us on WhatsApp with a photo first.
Where to keep it in the fridge
- On a middle shelf, in its original carton. The carton protects it from light.
- Not in the freezer, and not touching the back wall, where it can freeze. A frozen pen or syringe must not be used, even after it thaws.
- Not in the door. The temperature there changes every time the fridge is opened.
- A small fridge thermometer shows whether your fridge really stays between 2 °C and 8 °C.
Power cuts
- Keep the fridge door shut. A closed fridge usually stays cold for a few hours.
- For a long power cut, move the medicine to a cool box with ice packs, wrapped in a cloth so it never touches the ice directly.
- If you are not sure whether it got too warm, ask our pharmacist before using it.
Before you use it
Some medicines need to rest at room temperature for a short time before use, and some must not be shaken. The leaflet inside your pack says exactly what to do for your medicine.
